After experiencing consistent weight loss for several months, I encountered a frustrating plateau. Despite my best efforts, sticking to my eating plan became a challenge, especially in the middle of the week. My breakthrough came when I realized that Wednesdays—ironically, my easiest work day—gave me too much free time, leading to boredom and overeating.
Identifying High-Risk Situations
During this period, Wednesdays at noon became what I refer to as a 'high-risk situation'. But what exactly does this mean? A high-risk situation is any scenario that tempts you to stray from your nutrition or exercise goals. These situations can be social, emotional, or routine-based, ranging from a birthday celebration (a positive social event) to a tension-filled family gathering (a negative social event). Recognizing these can be crucial in maintaining your health and fitness routine.
My 5-Step Problem-Solving Model
To tackle my midweek overeating, I employed a straightforward, five-step Problem-Solving Model:
1. Identify the Problem: My boredom on Wednesdays led to overeating. The “Just-Do-It” wasn’t enough.
2. Explore Possible Solutions: I brainstormed several strategies:
- Pre-packaging foods I frequently overindulged in.
- Leaving my credit card at home to avoid impulsive purchases.
- Removing snacks from my office entirely.
3. Make a Plan: I chose to pre-package my meals and clear out office snacks—simple, actionable steps I was ready to commit to.
4. Implement the Plan: I didn't eliminate all snacks; instead, I stored them in a colleague's office. I also set a reminder to prepare my meals every Tuesday night.
5. Evaluate the Plan: This strategy significantly curbed my midweek splurges. It's crucial to remember, however, that if the plan had failed, I wouldn’t have given up. Instead, I would revisit step two and adjust my approach.
Your Turn to Act
Now, I encourage you to identify and tackle your own high-risk situations. Reflect on social interactions, emotions, or routines that might derail your progress. Think about your last setback and analyze the circumstances that led to it.
By applying this 5-step problem-solving method, you can proactively manage and overcome obstacles in your health and fitness journey.
